May 2020 Book Review

31 May 2020

I read 4 books in May and all 4 were different yet great in their own way.

I was a little apprehensive about this book from it's title but boy was I wrong.
I thought this might be some sort of women's lib rhetoric but instead, I was pointed continually to the truth of God's word.

I recently started listening to books on audible and this book is definitely one that I would recommend you listen to. Some books are meant to be heard so the author can instill their passion and voice. Jess will encourage you like a best friend-mom-big sister and inspire you to RUN toward Jesus! In fact, instead of feeling like you have to do it all or be the best at something, she preaches that we should take ourselves OUT of the running and rely on His strength. If you have ever struggled with not feeling good enough or have imposter syndrome, this one is for you!

Next up was a book I read a few years ago but I thought I'd read it aloud to my now teenagers and I'm so glad I did. Jesus >Religion by Jefferson Bethke is a book that crosses generations. It will make you consider if you're inadvertently following a set of rules or principles, or if you're actually following Jesus. I loved how simple Jefferson makes it. We tend to over complicate things, don't we? Jefferson's writing is both relatable and relevant. A great read that will have you examining your own life and spark some wonderful conversations.

Back in October of last year, Zach was diagnosed with being on the autism spectrum (coupled with having ADHD). More recently, after having another evaluation, we were that told that Zach is NOT on the autism spectrum. However, he still has ADHD. This explains many of his particular challenges so naturally, as his mom, I'm trying to learn as much as I can about it. For about 6 months now, we've seen BIG improvements with Zach. It may be due to maturity, change in diet, or due to the supplements he's been taking. I think it's probably a combination of all three. Currently, Zach does not take any prescription medications so learning how best to support his body and brain through supplements, diet, and exercise are key components to his overall health and growth. In Finally Focused, Dr. Greenblatt has been treating patients with ADHD for over 30 years and I really appreciate his natural approach.
He's not against medications. He just takes more of a holistic approach to treating his patients. I think too many doctors these days are only concerned with masking the symptoms instead of getting to the root cause. If your kid has ADHD, this book is worth the read-- even if you don't end up taking all of the advice.

Lastly, I finished up Dream With Me by John M. Perkins.
This is the same John M. Perkins that Switchfoot's song, The Sound is about (otherwise known as the John M. Perkins Blues). Boy, talk about a timely and important book to read.
AS a Christian, it should be a given I teach my children that every life has value and matters.
As a person who has been discriminated against in my life, I know what it feels like to be treated differently just because of my ethnicity or the color of my skin.
I hate filling out forms where they ask your race with a little box of choices to check. I want to cross out all those choices and answer instead, HUMAN.
We are all ONE race.

Perkins is now 90 years old and has lived through much in his life. In 1947, he watched his older brother get fatally shot by a police officer. He led voter registration efforts in 1964, worked for school desegregation in 1967, and was imprisoned and tortured in 1970. Through it all, he has remained determined to seek justice and reconciliation based in Christ's redemptive work.
"Justice is something that every generation has to strive for," he says. And despite the setbacks of recent years, Perkins finds hope in the young people he has met all across the nation who are hard at work, bringing about reconciliation in God's name and offering acceptance to all.
His gospel message #loveisthefinalfight.

We've made great strides in our country since the Civil Rights Movement but lately, it seems like we've taken two steps back. Praying for unity, peace, love, and reconciliation. Lord help us.

Memorial Day Weekend

30 May 2020

Mom came to visit for the weekend and we ended up taking a drive to Idyllwild where we enjoyed a picnic at the park in cooler temps.

The park was finally open for the kids to play.

Out little guy is getting so big.

 Me and mom.

 Fireman Zach.

Cooling off in the creek.

These two are always up for an adventure together.

 Serene and peaceful.

We introduced mom to our new favorite Ice Cream Shop.

This time, Morgan tried the shaved ice, which was also fantastic!

The next day, we met my brother and his family up at Oak Glen where the cousins played catch.

 My handsome patriotic boys.

My sweet niece, Eleanor.

Mom and her 8 grandkids.

It was wonderful to have my mom visit us for a few days. We relaxed, barbequed, played ping pong, took a day trip to Idyllwild, and then celebrated Memorial Day by meeting up with the rest of my family in Oak Glen for lunch.

Is it really almost June??

The Beach is Calling

21 May 2020

For a couple of weeks now, the weather has been so nice, I've really REALLY wanted to go to the beach but with all the restrictions we've been hearing about on CA beaches, we just weren't sure if it would be worth the 2 hour drive.

Silly me. Forgetting that the beach is ALWAYS worth the drive.
There's just something about the salt water, waves, and vast ocean that feel so freeing and healing.

Toes in the sand and feeling grand!

Couldn't keep Zach out of the water. Probably because the ocean temp was warmer than expected.

He was having a fantastic time.

The girls had fun beachcombing and enjoyed Chinese take out??
No, these were actually Acai Bowls from the beach cafe and they put them in these cute take out containers.

I have a friend who travels a lot with her family and she told me last week that she had been to Oceanside Beach where social restrictions were very minimal. So, we decided to pack up the new car and give it a shot. And I'm so glad we did!

We parked on the street (which was free and not a problem at all). We got to sit on the beach and no one said a word. Not even the police who drove by several times. The Buccaneer Beach Cafe was open for take out as well as their bathrooms for public use.
Everyone kept their social distance and no masks were required.
You can't tell from these pictures but by afternoon, there were lots of people out and about.
It almost felt like a normal So. Cal day and let's be honest, we could all use a dose of normal right about now.

Of course, things could change here in CA day by day but if you're wondering, I guess Ventura Co. beaches are the least restricted, followed by San Diego Co., then LA Co. being the most restricted.

Go find your happy place! 🌞🌊

New Car

20 May 2020

Morgan surprised me last Friday when he came home with this.
I thought we were just test driving it but no, he's full of surprises I tell ya!

A new Hyundai Palisade.

I still remember the day I got the minivan. I wasn't sure how I felt about it back then but 12 years later and I can honestly say it's been my favorite car I've ever owned.

Maybe it's because all my babies grew up in that car.

We've put a lot of miles and a lot more memories than I can count in that van.

It's been really good to us but now it's time for a new season of life.

I'm back to driving an SUV and I'm quite happy about that!

Now, if I could just learn to operate all the smart functions on the new car. 😜

Thankful for a new ride, a sweet hubby, and a new season of memories to come!

Happy Mother's Day

12 May 2020

It may seem counter-cultural in a world that values independence but I believe being a mom is the most important job there is. We are raising future generations for Him--Kingdom work from our very own homes.

This little cutie came downstairs in the morning to give me this. 💘

Faith has been into making watercolor art lately and she made me this beautiful piece.

This was the outside of Grace's lovely card.

And as if that weren't enough, my sweet daughters wrote these beautiful words and of course, it brought me to tears. 😢 #undeservingyetgrateful

My kids sure know the way to my heart. 💝
I'm not a big gift person but I do value words of affirmation and quality time with the ones I love.
These are my love languages.

We spent a relaxing Sunday at home. Typically Sundays around here are known as Panini Sundays.
We go to church and then I break out the panini maker to make grilled sandwiches for everyone.
Other than watching church online these days, we've been keeping that tradition alive.
In the afternoon, Zach and I spent some time playing in the pool.

Zach is quite the fish and would swim everyday. He's also all boy and loves to make a big splash.

Then he decided to strip down and do a little skinny dipping. 🙈

Morgan grilled up some filet steaks for dinner.
We've been barbequing a lot around here and I'm not mad about it one bit!

And we tried out our new veggie grilling tray.
Why has it taken me so long to have one of these?
Grilled veggies are the best!

Straight out of the shower with no make up but covered in love by God's grace and the gift of my 3 children.
I couldn't have asked for a more perfect Mother's Day. Love them so much!

We heard this song during our church service that morning and it just overwhelmed me to tears.
My God has been so faithful to me everyday of my life.
If you need to be reminded of His goodness, listen to this song and remember.

Mother's Day Weekend Hike

11 May 2020

We headed up to Idyllwild to hike one of our favorite trails.

The smell of pine trees and fresh air was so lovely.

The stream was really flowing.

All my favorite people on one old tree.

Daddy's shadow.

My hiking buddy.

My best girls.

Faith is always the adventurer, taking the road less traveled.

And I'm just trying to get to the other side without falling and breaking something.

Zach, the kid who likes to live on the edge needed to touch the bubbles.

We packed a lunch but weren't sure where we could stop to eat.
We saw that the Idyllwild Ice Cream & Jerky Shop was open so Morgan asked the owner if we could sit outside on their picnic table. He was very kind to let us do so.

After lunch, we had to try the homemade ice cream, which was so delicious!

Happy boy!

What a wonderful day it was! First of all, it was about 30 degrees cooler up there and being outside, hiking in nature just makes me so happy. We noticed that many of the shops in this little mountain town were open.
In fact, while we were sitting there having our lunch, about 15 other people came by to enjoy some ice cream, sit at the picnic tables and just enjoy a nice day outside. Everyone was so friendly, chatty, and just happy to be out! Hardly anyone was wearing a mask either.

It was practically a normal day and that made it all the more special because that means hope is on the rise here in CA. On the way home, Morgan said, "I didn't even mind that I just spent $25 on 5 scoops of ice cream." 😂

Fun day with my crew!
