We Believe

12 December 2011

Did you happen to catch the game last night?  Broncos vs. the Bears?

Although Morgan loves football and played QB in high school and college, we don’t watch a ton of football at home.  He says it’s just too time consuming with the girls around (plus, the commercials are terrible).  Once in a while, he records a game and zips through it later at night or simply watches the highlights online.  Admittedly, I don’t follow football but I do know about Tim Tebow.  The Heisman Trophy winner has gotten a lot of press regarding his beliefs, his public display of acknowledging God during games, and the courage to live out his faith, on and off the football field.

The first round NFL draft pick has also received a lot of criticism.  It seemed like everyone had an opinion on Tim Tebow.  He was ridiculed for his game, his lack of experience, his outward display of “religiosity”, and simply being a poster “good boy” without the chops to back up his big league hype.  Over the months, I’ve read many articles and comments stating- he’s just not that good.  There are some serious haters out there and many of them disliked him for his outward display of evangelism.  For non-believers, they thought Tebow was praying to win games and claimed, “God doesn’t care about a football game!  Get over yourself.”

All along, Tebow remained humble, quiet and steadfast.  He gave praise and honor to God, win or lose.  He stayed true to his beliefs and he didn’t allow what people thought of him to define him.  Fast forward just 8 short weeks and Tebow and his team are now 7-1.  They’ve won 6 straight games, 5 of those with 4th quarter rallies, 3 of which were won in OT.  Yesterday’s win moved the Broncos into sole possession of first place in the AFC West.

After the game, one announcer said, “Unlike any other QB in history, Tebow has the uncanny ability to inspire greatness from those around him.  He doesn’t quit believing in the impossible and therefore, his teammates believe as well.”

Does God care about a football game?  I believe He does.  Our God cares about every detail of our lives.  He uses whatever circumstance we’re in to bring about glory to Himself.  He honors those who walk by faith and have the courage to honor Him, in spite of the opposition.  And if that means clutch plays in OT and miracle outcomes, so be it.

The compelling part of this story is not about Tim Tebow or football but about something much greater.  It’s about inspiration, faith, and courage in the face of adversity.  It inspires those who already believe but more importantly, it gives others a glimpse into the power and providence of a good God, who’s still in the business of making miracles.

Believe it or not, for Tim Tebow, winning football games, might just be… icing on the cake.

First, I want to thank my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Next, I'd like to thank Tim Tebow for breathing new life into my dead Broncos. Amen.

Love it! So True! By the way . . . Derek had picked up his biography and I read it too - great book (minus the football stuff for me!). Remind me to pass it along to you if you're interested. smooch. I love the intro chapters that talk about his homeschool journey and family life.
