Daddy Book

It’s no secret that Morgan plays a big part of the girls’ homeschooling experience.   We do not take this for granted as we know it’s a huge blessing that daddy gets to be home with us during the week (as long as he’s not traveling out of town).  In addition to the reading I do with the girls throughout the day, Morgan reads to them in the morning, in the afternoon before nap, in the evenings, and any other time he can sneak in a beloved book. 

Lately, one of the things we’ve been incorporating into our routine is having a “daddy book.”  A daddy book is simply a chapter book (or a longer book) that only daddy reads to the girls.  In the past, as it worked out, I read all the chapter books and Morgan would simply read any of the other books we had lying around.  After reading our chapter books, the girls and I would often attempt to summarize the story for dad.  As we all know, even the best summary is never as great as reading the book for yourself.

A daddy book gave him an opportunity to have an ongoing conversation with the girls.  It gave the girls something extra to look forward to and it created another special time, just with dad.  Moreover, daddy really enjoyed the journey! 

Morgan just finished reading two books.  The first was Doctor Dolittle (for the girls’ 2nd time) and just recently, the Newberry honor book, My Father’s Dragon.  Both were full of adventure, whimsical merriment, and creative problem solving.  The girls absolutely delighted in the quirky, nonsensical logic of My Father’s Dragon.  I would often hear bouts of hysterical laughter and glee as Morgan read this story.  In fact, I’m not sure who enjoyed it more??  The girls or daddy?!!

Speaking of a journey and adventure, it’s finally that time!  We’ve packed a few good books and we’re off on our next adventure!  Praying for health, safety, good weather, and of course, wonderful memories to last a lifetime.
