Advent Celebration

Making their paper chain.

See!

No, they're not excited at all...

Grace is such a poser. I wonder who she gets that from? :)

Our advent celebration started last night! This is the second year that we've celebrated advent with the girls. Last year, in addition to our advent calendar, we lit small votive candles each night until we got to Christmas Day. Then, along with Jesus' birthday cake, we lit one big candle on Christmas. Just like last year, I have written down different activities to do each night and filled each calendar pocket with the piece of paper. Some of the activities include reading a Christmas book, coloring a Christmas picture, singing carols, going to a Christmas parade (already on the calendar), reading different scriptures about the birth of Jesus, or making a gingerbread house. This year, we also made a paper chain. Each night, we end with a special prayer and we let the girls move the candy cane marker to the next day on the calendar. They also get to tear off one of their chain links. This way, the girls get to visually see how many days are actually left until Christmas. I love how this tradition teaches our kids patience, the joy and thrill of anticipation, and counting to boot! Happy Advent!
