The girls enjoyed reading this simple yet factual biography on one of America’s best loved, real life legends.
Today, we followed that up with a field trip to an apple farm, led by Johnny himself!
On to the packing shed!
They learned how the apples are cleaned and sorted.
We walked with Johnny through the heirloom apple orchard and followed the "Apple Trail." The kids learned about the journey the apple takes from the orchard, through the packing shed, and on to the cider press or the grocery store. They also got to press their own cider, using an "old" hands-on cider press. A picnic lunch with friends capped off our day!
Faith had a question for Johnny. She asked him why he wasn’t barefoot (he was wearing moccasins).
His answer: Because it was cold! Apparently, it got down to 29 degrees up in the mountains the night before. He also told her that his Indian friends gave him the moccasins.
One of our best field trips to date!
