War Memorial, Insa-dong & Cheonggyecheon Stream

03 March 2007

We managed to get out yesterday despite the cold temperatures. We visited the War Memorial of Korea, which was very interesting. It gave us the history of the many wars in which Korea has been involved. Many documents and war memorabilia were displayed as examples of Korea's 5,000-year history of resistance to numerous invasions, not just the Korean War of 1950-1953. We both felt a whole new sense of pride and appreciation for what this country has been through to maintain its freedom. While we were there, a group of Korean army soldiers came to visit the war memorial at the same time.

We then went to Insa-dong. Insa-dong is in the heart of the city and it's where you will find traditional craft stores, tea houses, restaurants, shopping, antique art dealers, ceramics and paper stores. From there, a short walk led us to Cheonggyecheon Stream. The stream has a history of over 600 years. Long ago, the area was known as a shantytown but with its restoration in 2003, it is known today as a place where nature, history and culture meet.
