After contemplating for a few months, we finally did it. We cancelled our cable TV. For a few years now, we've narrowed our viewing choices down to a few shows that were more informational, rather than the sensational. We also had DVR so we never watched any commercials and all our shows were pretty much recorded. Regardless, Morgan and I found ourselves (like everyone else), mindlessly wasting a couple of hours each night on television. I called it "winding down" but often times, it was simply an addictive habit of laying on the couch and going numb for a while. Thankfully, we still have our Netflix account so we can always pick out an interesting movie to watch together. Sadly, our mindless TV time even got in the way of watching movies.
In addition to saving $100/month, we are looking forward to all the possibilities of our new evening time... reading, talking, dreaming, bible study, cuddling, listening to music, and exercising together. All of these activities are worth far more than anything TV could offer. Seriously, was there anything good to watch anyway? Does any of it add any value to my life? NO. Even the Nat Geo, History, and Discovery channels were beginning to sound like propaganda spiked with subconscious programming.
I heard in Australia that TV is called the "idiot box". The idiot box never shuts up and it only talks rubbish. Studies have shown that TV has been linked to a form of psychological and emotional addiction. Some people "need" to watch their favorite TV shows. They get nervous and suffer from "withdrawals" if they miss them. They need their "fix" as soon as possible. All of this worries me for our future generations. Real and personal communication is being lost. Everyday, people are being negatively influenced by all forms of media. Since when did watching someone else's "make-believe" life, become a replacement for LIVING OUR OWN?
We finally say, "NO THANK YOU. Go sell crazy somewhere else." :)
Love it - go sell crazy somewhere else - ha!!
